Home Chapter: Nelson Senior FFA Chapter SAE Project(s): I currently have two SAE projects: beef production entrepreneurship and fruit production placement. My beef production SAE began around two years ago when I purchased two Holstein heifers and two Black Angus heifers. I spend time feeding, vaccinating, deworming, maintaining their pasture, and ensuring that they are in good health. My fruit production placement started in seventh grade at Silver Creek Orchards. This was a paid job that helped to fund my beef production entrepreneurship. Some of my tasks included grape yield projections, orchard maintenance, quality control, fruit sales and marketing, and various agritourism activites during fall festivals.
Favorite CDE or LDE: My favorite CDE is by far Meats Evaluation and Technology. This was the first ever FFA activity that I did in eighth grade, so it was really the beginning of my FFA journey. I have competed in this contest every year since I started and will compete at the national level this year. I have always really enjoyed the identification aspect of this competition, and it even helps me in my daily life when I am going to the grocery store or cooking dinner!
Favorite FFA memory Virginia FFA Leadership Camp was my favorite FFA memory. I was able to attend the overnight camp twice in eighth and ninth grade, the day camp in eleventh grade, and a combination of both this year as a state officer. This experience was one of my first multi-chapter experiences in FFA, so I made most of my close friends through the different years that I attended. I always loved being able to better myself as a leader while also making some of the best connections that I still have today. My FFA experience has really come full circle this year being able to work with the campers as a state officer.
Future Plans: My future plans are attending Virginia Tech for animal science and biochemistry. I hope to stay involved with agriculture through a career in research and development involving livestock health, vaccinations, and genetics.
